How to get to the Reserve

The road to Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is half paved and in good conditions and the other half unpaved (a vehicle equipped with four-wheel-drive is recommended but not necessary). From San Jose take the new highway "Autopista del Sol to Puntatenas, then take the Inter-American highway North to kilometer 133, then turn right towards Sardinal at the gas station until you reach Santa Elena (about 29 Kilometers). Once you reach Santa Elena continue for another 6 kilometers following the signs. This will bring you to the entrance to the reserve.Where the road ends.
Using Public Transportation
For tourists who need public transportation, there are bus services available twice a day at 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m; from San José to Santa Elena (town 6 km away from Monteverde Reserve). Contact Autos Transportes Tilarán Tel. (506) 2222-3854. The trip takes around 4 ½ hours.
After getting to Santa Elena there is a service run by TRANSMONTEVERDE B.S.A. that travels from Santa Elena to the Reserve (and back) in the following schedules
Departures from Santa Elena: 6:15 a.m, 7:30 a.m, 1:20 p.m, 3:00 p.m.
Departures from la Reserva: 6:45 a.m, 11:30 a.m, 2:00 p.m, 4:00 p.m.
